He was born on 3rd December 1897 at Pantanaw, father was U Ba Oh and mother, Daw Nyo. He interested in painting since childhood and started drawing just 4 years old. When he was 14 years old, he studied art under U Boe Maung . In 1912, U Ba Nyan was admitted to attend Saint Methew Teachers Training College, Mawlamyaing supported by Government. The Principle of College was Mr. E.G.N Kinch and taught him not only basic drawing but also English.
In 1918, he was appointed as Drawing Master at State High School, Yangon. Besides he studied Oil painting under the guidance of Professor K.M Ward and also under Mr. Martin Jones.
In 1920, he became an art instructor at Burma Art Club and taught basic design with Professor Ward who taught him Oil painting and Mr. Martin John who taught him structure.
In 1921, he won a scholarship to learn art in abroad and he studied art particularly painting for one and half years at the Royal College of Art, London, then he studied again at Yellow Door School in London. In 1924, he returned Myanmar when end of his scholastic year.
In 1925, he admitted again to travel abroad as a painting traveler of Europe supported by Government. He traveled to study art one & half years to Western Countries.In 1926, he studied art again at Yellow Door School in London over 4 years with owned expenses.
He returned Myanmar in June 1930. On 19th August 1930, his first solo art show hold at Resident of Governor sponsored by Sr. J A. Maung Gyi who was Governor of Myanmar. There were 128 artworks and sold 3.75 of all within 2 days.
He served as Lecturer of painting & drawing at Teacher Training College.
He married to Daw Sein Khaing when he was over 40 years old. In 1942, he served as Principle at Art Academy.
He passed away on 12th October 1945 at Katoe village, Mawlamyaing. He was 48 years old.
